How to play fill-in word puzzles

Every answer is already in the word bank. Your task is to find its place in the grid.

  1. Select a numbered space that runs across or down. Blocked squares end a space.
  2. Choose a word with exactly the same number of letters. Use every listed word once.
  3. At each crossing, both words must share the same letter. The puzzle is complete when every space is filled and all crossings agree.

A four-word example

The word bank is CAT, NET, PLANT, TRAIN. CAT and NET need three squares; PLANT and TRAIN need five.

The top word ends where the long down word begins. Only TRAIN begins with the final T of either three-letter word, so TRAIN goes down. Its bottom N starts NET; CAT takes the top space. PLANT crosses TRAIN at A.

Placing and correcting words

Tap a square, then a word in the bank. At a crossing, tap again or choose Switch direction. Next space selects the next across or down space.

A word labelled “Used” has been placed; it is not a correctness check. Conflicting crossings show both letters and an exclamation mark. Select either word and use Clear word, or replace it with another available word of the same length. Undo reverses your latest move.

Hint checks the current placements. It offers a word that allows a full solution, or highlights a misplaced word to clear. A hint changes the board only when you apply it.

Keyboard controls

On the grid, arrow keys move between open squares. Enter or Space switches direction at a crossing. Delete clears the selected word, and U undoes a move. Tab to the word bank and press Enter to place a word. The buttons provide the same actions on touch screens.

Daily and Practice

Fillquay has 24 original puzzles: 12 at 5 × 5 and 12 at 6 × 6. Daily and Practice use the same collection. Daily rotates by UTC date, so boards repeat. An open Daily stays on its saved date until you choose Play today’s puzzle. Switching to today keeps the old progress saved.

Your progress is saved in this browser when storage is available. Undo history lasts for the current visit. Restart asks before clearing the current puzzle.

Continue in practice returns to your saved practice puzzle at this size. Next puzzle asks before leaving an unfinished practice puzzle with moves. Its saved progress stays in the collection; cycle through the puzzles to return.
